Stocks Headed for a Mixed Finish


Stocks are headed for a mixed finish in trading today despite better than expected consumer sentiment data. Investors have remained cautious in trading today despite the strong economic data as they digested news that JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) suffered a $2 billion trading loss.

At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.08% lower at 12,845.28, the S&P 500 was trading 0.10% lower at 1,356.67, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.29% higher at 2,942.02.


Financials are leading the losses in the S&P 500 in trading today. At last check, the sector was down 0.85%. Basic Materials stocks have also fallen sharply in trading today. At last check, the sector was trading 0.56% lower. Energy stocks are currently trading 0.50% lower. Consumer Cyclical stocks have been the best performers in the S&P 500 in trading today. At last check, the sector was trading 0.38% higher. Transportation stocks are currently trading 0.35% higher.

Among the major gainers and losers in late trading today are JP Morgan, which is currently trading 9.35% lower at $36.90, Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ARNA), which is currently trading 74.86% higher at $6.40, Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE: SNE), which is currently trading 8% lower at $14.15, Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), which is currently trading 9.54% higher at $13.21, Education Management Corp. (NASDAQ: EDMC), which is currently trading 7% lower at $9.83, McDermott International (NYSE: MDR), which is currently trading 15.77% higher at $11.45, and Alere Inc. (NYSE: ALR), which is currently trading 13.63% lower at $19.26.

European markets ended on a mixed note earlier today, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.57% higher, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.01% lower.
