Stocks Headed for a Mixed Finish


Stocks are headed for a mixed finish in trading today as investors remain cautious ahead of the release of the all-important nonfarm payrolls for the month of March.

The Labor Department will release the March jobs report on Friday. Investors are hoping for to see further signs of improvement in the U.S. labor market when the jobs report is released on Friday. Earlier in the week, ADP released its jobs report for the month of March, which showed that the U.S. private sector added 209,000 jobs last month. Meanwhile, the Labor Department today reported that initial jobless claims fell to a four-year low last week.


With all eyes on the jobs report, investors have remained on sidelines today. At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.18% lower at 13,051.21, the S&P 500 was trading 0.07% lower at 1,398, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.35% higher at 3,078.78.

Conglomerates have been the worst performers in the S&P 500 in trading today. At last check, Conglomerates were trading 0.94% lower. Utilities have also fallen sharply in trading today. At last check, Utilities were trading 0.55% lower. Energy stocks are currently trading 0.39% lower, while Basic Materials stocks are currently trading 0.42% lower.

Among the major movers in late trading today are InterMune Inc. (NASDAQ: ITMN), which is currently trading 10.02% higher at $15.26, Polycom Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), which is currently trading 20.29% lower at $14.50, Gold Resource Corporation (AMEX: GORO), which is currently trading 7.91% higher at $25.64, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY), which is currently trading 8.83% higher at $72.07, and Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE: STZ), which is currently trading 12.56% lower at $21.57.

European markets ended on a mixed note earlier today, with the FTSE 100 Index closing 0.35% higher, while the EURO STOXX 50 index closing 0.25% lower.
