Stocks Headed for a Mixed Finish
Stocks are headed for a mixed finish in trading today, with the Dow Jones and S&P 500 marginally lower in trading currently. Investors’ sentiment has been weighed down in trading today by some weak U.S. economic data.
Earlier today, the Commerce Department reported that sales at U.S. retailers rose 0.1% in the month of December, well below economists’ forecast. Meanwhile, initial jobless claims for last week rose more than forecast.
The weak U.S. economic data has offset some positive developments in the euro zone. At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.14% lower at 12,431.52, the S&P 500 was trading 0.04% lower at 1,291.99, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.19% higher at 2,716.04.
Energy stocks have been the worst performers in the S&P 500 in trading today. At last check, Energy stocks were trading 0.33% lower. Basic Materials stocks have been the best performers in the S&P 500 in trading today. At last check, Basic Materials stocks were trading 0.90% higher. Industrials are also up sharply in trading currently. At last check, Industrials were trading 0.64% higher. Conglomerates are currently trading 0.47% higher.
Williams-Sonoma Inc. (NYSE: WSM) shares have been among the worst performers in trading today. Shares of Williams-Sonoma are sinking today after the company lowered its fourth-quarter earnings guidance. The stock fell to an intra-day low of $33.30 in trading today, and at last check, it was down 12.49% to $34.20.
Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) shares are also falling in trading today after the company warned that its fourth-quarter earnings will be significantly below third-quarter earnings. Chevron shares fell to an intra-day low of $104.52 in trading today, and at last check, the stock was down 2.49% to $105.09.
Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. (NYSE: DKS) shares have been among the major gainers in trading today. The stock is soaring after the company announced a $200 million share buyback program. Dick’s Sporting Goods shares are currently trading 10.88% higher at $40.36. The stock rose to an intra-day high of $40.57 earlier today.
