Stocks Headed for a Lower Finish on Greek Debt Worries


Stocks are headed for a lower finish in trading today amid worries about the Greek debt crisis. Stocks slipped after Greece’s latest debt restructuring discussions with its creditors failed. Some mixed corporate earnings report have also weighed down investors’ sentiment.

At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.41% lower at 12,657.20, the S&P 500 was trading 0.28% lower at 1,312.30, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.06% lower at 2,782.55.


Transportation stocks are leading the losses in the S&P 500 in late trading. At last check, Transportation stocks were trading 0.87% lower. Basic Materials stocks have also fallen sharply in trading today. At last check, Basic Materials stocks were trading 0.77% lower. Energy stocks are down 0.28% in trading currently. Consumer Cyclical stocks have been the best performers in trading today. At last check, Consumer Cyclical stocks were trading 0.60% higher.

Among the major gainers and losers in late trading are Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HOG), which is currently trading 0.98% higher at $42.28, McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD), which is currently trading 2.32% lower at $98.61, EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), which is currently trading 6.31% higher at $24.92, Kimberley Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB), which is currently trading 1.59% lower at $72.35, Polycom Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), which is currently trading 18.40% higher at $21.81, Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ), which is currently trading 2.01% lower at $37.63, and Waters Corporation (NYSE: WAT), which is currently trading 8.29% higher at $85.29.

European markets ended mostly lower in trading today. The FTSE 100 Index in London closed 0.53% lower at 5,751.90, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closed 0.47% lower at 3,322.65.
