Stocks Headed for a Higher Finish


Stocks are headed for a higher finish today, with all three major indexes holding on to their gains in late trading. Stocks rose today after Federal Reserve Chairman delivered his much-anticipated speech at the central banks’ meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In his speech, Bernanke indicated that the Fed is ready for additional easing measures, if the economic conditions deteriorate.

At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.61% higher at 13,080.31, the S&P 500 was trading 0.49% higher at 1,406.31, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.52% higher at 3,064.66.

Basic Materials sector is leading the gains in the S&P 500 in late trading today. At last check, the sector was trading 0.98% higher. Energy sector is currently trading 0.67% higher. Technology sector is up 0.55% in trading currently, while Financials are up 0.45% currently. Industrials are currently trading 0.58% higher. Utilities have been the worst performers today. At last check, the sector was down 0.25%.

Among the major gainers in late trading today are Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), which is currently trading 13.77% higher at $34.70, SAIC Inc. (NYSE: SAI), which is currently trading 2.71% higher at $12.13, OmniVision Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI), which is currently trading 3.13% higher at $16.41, Esterline Technologies Corporation (NYSE: ESL), which is currently trading 11.94% higher at $59.26, and Zale Corporation (NYSE: ZLC), which is currently trading 10.93% higher at $5.58.

Among the major losers in trading currently are Zumiez Inc. (NASDAQ: ZUMZ), which is currently trading 9.96% lower at $29, and Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB), which is currently trading 5.34% lower at $18.07.
