Stocks Finish Higher
Stocks bounced back in late trading on Monday to finish the day in green. All three major indexes rose for a second successive trading session.
The Dow Jones ended the day 0.14% higher at 14,567.17, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.47% higher at 1,562.50, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.86% higher at 3,233.55.
All sectors in the S&P 500 except Conglomerates ended the day in green. Technology sector led the gains, ending the day 1% higher. Basic Materials and Energy sectors also rose sharply, ending the day 0.61% and 0.85% higher, respectively. Conglomerates ended the day 0.82% lower.
Among the major movers on Monday were Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT), which ended the day 2.83% higher at $82.71, General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), which ended the day 1.84% lower at $21.35, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), which ended the day 2.08% higher at $398.67, International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM), which ended the day 1.14% lower at $187.83, and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), which ended the day 3.58% higher at $30.83.
On the economic front, a report released by the National Association of Realtors showed that existing home sales slipped 0.6% in March to a seasonally adjusted 4.92 million annual rate.
European markets ended on a mixed note on Monday, with FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.09% lower, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing flat. Asian markets ended mostly higher overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index in Japan closing 1.89% higher, and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong closing 0.14% higher.
