Stocks Extend Gains in Mid-Day Trading


Stocks have extended their gains in mid-day trading today, with all three major indexes currently near session highs. Stocks are rising on the back of some solid corporate earnings reports, which have overshadowed weak economic data.

At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 1.29% higher at 13,087.58, the S&P 500 was trading 1.29% higher at 1,387.29, and the Nasdaq was trading 1.57% higher at 3,035.31.


All sectors in the S&P 500 are currently near session highs. The gains in the S&P 500 are currently being led by Technology stocks, which are up 1.64%. Energy stocks are currently trading 1.62% higher, while Basic Materials stocks are currently trading 1.46% higher. Financials are currently trading 1.31% higher. Conglomerates are currently trading 1.62% higher, while Industrials are currently trading 1.44% higher.

Among the major gainers in trading currently are Comerica Incorporated (NYSE: CMA), which is currently trading 3.31% higher at $31.88, Digital Domain Media Group Inc. (NYSE: DDMG), which is currently trading 15.92% higher at $5.92, Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ: NTRS), which is currently trading 1.95% higher at $47.06, Forest Laboratories Inc. (NYSE: FRX), which is currently trading 4.01% higher at $34.99, and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), which is currently trading 3.21% higher at $598.74.

Among the major losers in trading currently are Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), which is currently trading 0.20% lower at $63.85, and Apollo Residential Mortgage Inc. (NYSE: AMTG), which is currently trading 6.12% lower at $17.96.

Earlier today, a report released by the Commerce Department showed that housing starts fell unexpectedly in March. According to figures released by the Commerce Department, housing starts slipped 5.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 654,000 units in March. Building permits, which indicates future activity, however, rose to their highest level in more than three years.
