Stocks End Lower


Stocks slipped in trading on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq snapping an eight-day winning streak. All three benchmark indexes edged lower on Tuesday as market participants digested some mixed economic data and earnings report. Investors also remained on the sidelines ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s testimony.

The Dow Jones ended the day 0.21% lower at 15,451.85, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.37% lower at 1,676.26, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.25% lower at 3,598.50.

Telecommunications sector was the worst performer in the S&P 500 on Tuesday, ending the day 1.46% lower. Consumer Cyclical sector also fell sharply, ending the day 0.62% lower. Basic Materials sector was the best performer in the S&P 500, ending the day 0.52% higher.

Among the major movers on Tuesday were Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS), which ended the day 1.69% lower at $160.24, The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO), which ended the day 1.90% lower at $40.23, and SHFL Entertainment Inc. (NASDAQ: SHFL), which ended the day 21.98% higher at $22.81.

On the economic front, a report released by the Labor Department showed that consumer prices rose 0.5% in June. Core consumer prices, meanwhile, rose 0.2%. A report from the Federal Reserve showed that industrial production rose 0.3% in June. According to the National Association of Homebuilders, confidence among U.S. homebuilders rose in July to the highest level since January 2006.

European markets ended mostly lower on Tuesday, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.45% lower, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.71% lower. Asian markets ended mostly higher overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index in Japan closing 0.64% higher, and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong closing 0.04% higher.
