Stocks End Higher


Stocks ended the week on a strong note, with all three major indexes finishing higher on Friday. Stocks rebounded after two straight days of losses. However, all three indexes finished lower for the week.

The Dow Jones ended the day 0.07% higher at 14,547.51, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.88% higher at 1,555.25, and the Nasdaq ended the day 1.25% higher at 3,206.06. For the week, the Dow Jones ended 2.14% lower, the S&P 500 ended 2.10% lower, and the Nasdaq ended 2.70% lower.

All sectors in the S&P 500 except Conglomerates ended in green on Friday. The gains were led by Healthcare sector, which ended the day 1.76% higher. Basic Materials sector ended the day 1.19% higher, while Industrials ended the day 1.36% higher. Financials rose 1.29%. Conglomerates ended the day 1.13% lower.

Among the major movers on Friday were Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: VRTX), which ended the day 61.45% higher at $85.36, International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM), which ended the day 8.28% lower at $190, Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), which ended the day 4.43% higher at $799.87, General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), which ended the day 4.06% lower at $21.75, and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), which ended the day 3.40% higher at $29.77.

European markets ended mostly higher, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.69% higher, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 1.46% higher. Asian markets ended mostly higher overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index in Japan closing 0.73% higher, and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong closing 2.33% higher.
