Stocks End Higher
Stocks ended higher in trading on Thursday even as investors digested disappointing initial jobless claims data. Market sentiment was lifted by Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) aggressive monetary easing measures.
The Dow Jones ended the day 0.38% higher at 14,606.11, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.40% higher at 1,559.98, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.20% higher at 3,224.98.
All sectors in the S&P 500 except Energy ended the day in green. Consumer Cyclical sector led the gains in the S&P 500, ending the day 1.67% higher. Basic Materials sector also rose sharply, ending the day 0.85% higher. Financials ended the day 0.67% higher. Energy sector ended the day 0.25% lower.
Among the major movers in trading on Thursday were Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), which ended the day 16.07% higher at $25.13, NII Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: NIHD), which ended the day 10.10% lower at $4.54, CONN’s Inc. (NASDAQ: CONN), which ended the day 13.07% higher at $44.11, Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB), which ended the day 3.13% higher at $27.07, and Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA), which ended the day 2.27% lower at $3.45.
On the economic front, a report released by the Labor Department showed that initial jobless rose unexpectedly last week to a seasonally adjusted 385,000. Market participants are waiting for the crucial nonfarm payrolls department, which will be released on Friday.
European markets ended mostly lower on Thursday, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 1.19% lower, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.77% lower. The Nikkei 225 Index in Japan rallied overnight after the BOJ unveiled aggressive monetary easing measures to fight deflation. The index closed 2.20% higher.
