Stocks Continue to Rise in Mid-Day Trading


Stocks have extended their gains in mid-day trading, with all three major indexes currently near session highs. Stocks are rebounding after posting losses for five consecutive days. Sentiments improved today after concerns about the euro zone eased a little and Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) kicked off the earnings season on a strong note.

At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.81% higher at 12,819.39, the S&P 500 was trading 0.89% higher at 1,370.67, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.96% higher at 3,019.80.


All sectors in the S&P 500 are currently in green. Industrials are leading the gains in the S&P 500 today after falling more than 2% on Tuesday. At last check, the sector was trading 1.66% higher. Energy stocks are currently trading 0.67% higher, while Basic Materials stocks are currently trading 0.83% higher. Financials are currently trading 1.54% higher. Transportation stocks are currently trading 1.16% higher.

Alcoa shares have been among the major gainers in trading. Alcoa shares are gaining on the back of better than expected first-quarter financial results. The stock rose to an intra-day high of $10.15, and at last check, it was up 7.56% to $10.02 on above average volume of 58.46 million.

Among the major gainers in mid-day trading today are Travelzoo Inc. (NASDAQ: TZOO), which is currently trading 31.81% higher at $27.76, Titan Machinery Inc. (NASDAQ: TITN), which is currently trading 15.58% higher at $31.75, Mattress Firm Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: MFRM), which is currently trading 18.14% higher at $44.22, and Standard Microsystems Corporation (NASDAQ: SMSC), which is currently trading 13.54% higher at $27.51.

Among the major losers in mid-day trading are Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE: NOK), which is currently trading 13.62% lower at $4.34, and Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC), which is currently trading 2.31% lower at $27.53.
