Samsung In Final Stage Discussions to Launch Google TV
Korean handset manufacturer, Samsung Electronics Inc. is said to be in final stage talks with Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) to begin manufacturing the android based televisions.
The report about the ongoing talks was announced by the television division of Samsung on Tuesday. The report however did not mention the timeline of the launch of the new television screens.
Currently Google TV comes loaded onto set top boxes and televisions from Logitech International and Sony Corp televisions, respectively. These televisions allow customers to access internet and online videos, games and specialized apps on their television screens along with regular television.
Early in the year Samsung launched a Google Television enabled Blu Ray player. The product was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but the offerings were not commercialized. The failure of the Blu Ray market to take off led to the cancellation of the company’s plans to launch the Google product into market.
The latest announcement comes directly from the head of the Samsung television division in Korea, Yoon Boo Keun. He said that their television will differ from the television screens that its competitors produce using Google TV.
Keun said that the Google TV will be unveiled sometime next year at an event, without divulging any more details about the exact dates and the type of televisions that will be hitting the market. Google is currently working with Samsung on the rollout.
Even after receiving Luke warm response to its first versions of the launch of the Google TV, Google has launched a completely revamped version of the television that is set to further make larger inroads into the living rooms of their customers.
According to Yoon, the television based on the next generation OLED displays will be unveiled at the upcoming CES event in Los Angeles in January. OLEDs are touted as the next incarnation of television screens and are crispier and shaper than older television screens. The screens do not require backlighting, which makes them much more thinner than other versions of television and also more energy efficient than other popular types of television screens, such as LCDs.
Samsung’s new television is set to compete against the yet uncertain Apple television, which is rumored to be Steve Jobs last project at Apple, which he was very excited about. Television manufacturers are preparing themselves for the unknown products, which could have the same impact on the television industry as the iPhone had on the smartphone market.
