Life Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:LIFE) 60.79 +5.82 (10.59%) rose after the hiring of strategic advisers sparked speculation the company may be sold.
Office Depot Inc. (NYSE:ODP) 4.65 +0.42 (9.93%) surpassed previous 52-week high and extended rally after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicted Online sales of office supplies will mark a big pickup in January. The stock has been gaining momentum as the company made some major announcements this week, including the relocation of its store in Orland Park.
Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) 22.38 +1.63 (7.86%) reported a profit in the fourth quarter, reversing a loss in the same period a year ago. WSJ states that the investment bank recorded strong revenue from its institutional-securities segment. The company also finally reached–and actually beat–its elusive mid-teens pretax-profit-margin goal in its wealth-management business.
Arch Coal Inc. (NYSE:ACI) 7.65 +0.55 (7.75%) is among top five global coal producer and marketer. The Wall Street Journal states that Sterne Agee said it expects a cyclical pricing recovery for coal, driven by favorable inventory trends. The firm said it sees coal markets continuing to bottom in the first half of the year, while “producer discipline, economic/industrial activity improvement and fiscal efforts globally should support cyclical recoveries” in power-plant and steel-making coal in the second half of 2013 and 2104.
Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) 12.70 +0.79 (6.63%) reached a deal to sell its U.S. headquarters at 550 Madison Ave. in New York for $1.1 billion, the company said, a strong price that shows how inventors are bidding aggressively for top Manhattan properties. Sony hopes to complete the deal by the end of March.
Losers
Finisar Corporation (NASDAQ:FNSR) 13.98 -1.60 (-10.27%), Jefferies downgraded the company’s stock to underperform from Hold with price target of $7.50,
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) 2.46 -0.28 (-10.22%) slumped on hefty volume of 27.71 million shares. AMD is to unveil its latest earnings on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. For the quarter the analyst anticipates earnings of a loss of 20 cents per share and for the year net loss of 23 cents per share.
Amarin Corporation plc. (ADR) (NASDAQ:AMRN) 8.47 -0.69 (-7.53%) plunged after the FDA’s update to its Orange Book gives it’s fish oil pill Vascepa “no unexpired exclusivity,” though no NCE decision was made.
Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE:COF) 56.99 -4.60 (-7.47%) fourth-quarter earnings surged amid strong revenue growth, though earnings and revenue missed analysts’ expectations, owing to higher loan-loss provisions and operating expenses. Jefferies & Company reiterated its Buy rating on Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE: COF) but lowered its price target from $70.00 to $67.00.
Wipro Limited (ADR) (NYSE:WIT) 9.20 -0.71 (-7.16%) posted a third quarter net profit of 17.16 billion rupees ($317 million) compared with 14.56 billion rupees a year earlier. Revenue rose 10% to 109.89 billion rupees from 99.65 billion rupees.
