Stocks End Higher
Stocks ended higher in trading on Friday even as market participants digested some disappointing housing market data.
The Dow Jones ended the day 0.31% higher at 15,010.36, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.39% higher at 1,663.47, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.52% higher at 3,657.79. For the week, the Dow Jones fell 0.47%, the S&P 500 rose 0.46%, and the Nasdaq rose 1.53%.
All sectors in the S&P 500 ended higher on Friday. Energy sector led the gains, ending the day 0.94% higher. Basic Materials sector also rose sharply, ending the day 0.82% higher. Consumer Non-Cyclical sector ended the day 0.84% higher.
Among the major movers on Friday included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), which ended the day 7.35% higher at $34.77, Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P), which ended the day 12.90% lower at $18.91, CYS Investments Inc. (NYSE: CYS), which ended the day 9.70% higher at $7.58, Hibbett Sports Inc. (NASDAQ: HIBB), which ended the day 8.67% lower at $53.40, and Autodesk Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), which ended the day 7.69% higher at $38.91.
On the economic front, a report showed that new home sales slumped 13.4% to a 394,000 annual rate in July, the lowest level in nine months.
European markets ended mostly higher on Friday, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.70% higher, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.25% higher. Asian markets ended on a mixed note overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index in Japan closing 2.21% higher, and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong closing 0.15% lower.
