Stocks End Higher; Post Gains for the Week
Stocks ended higher in a choppy trading session on Friday, with all three major indexes finishing the day in green. Stocks also rose sharply for the week.
The Dow Jones ended the day 0.02% higher at 15,464.30, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.31% higher at 1,680.19, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.61% higher at 3,600.08. For the week, the Dow Jones rose 2.16%, the S&P 500 rose 2.96%, and the Nasdaq rose 3.47%.
Healthcare sector led the gains in the S&P 500 on Friday, ending the day 0.62% higher. Technology sector also edged higher, ending the day 0.36% higher. Basic Materials sector was the worst performer in the S&P 500, ending the day 0.82% lower.
Among the major movers in trading on Friday were WebMD Health Corp. (NASDAQ: WBMD), which ended the day 25.45% higher at $33.82, United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS), which ended the day 5.83% lower at $86.12, and Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC), which ended the day 1.77% higher at $42.63.
On the economic front, a report released by the Labor Department showed that producer prices rose 0.8% in the month of June. Meanwhile, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s preliminary consumer sentiment index for July fell to 83.9.
European markets ended on a mixed note on Friday, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.02% higher, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.36% lower. Asian markets also ended on a mixed note overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index in Japan closing 0.23% higher, and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong closing 0.75% lower.
