Stocks Struggle for Direction


Stocks are struggling for direction in today, with all three major indexes marginally lower in trading today. Investors have been cautious in trading today following some weak earnings reports. Worries about the global economy and concerns about euro zone have also weighed down investors’ sentiment.

At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 0.02% lower at 12,962.55, the S&P 500 was trading 0.12% lower at 1,360.53, and the Nasdaq was trading 0.25% lower at 2,941.20.


Financials have been the worst performers in the S&P 500 today, down 0.74% currently. Conglomerates are down 0.25% in late trading. Technology stocks are down 0.18%, while Transportation stocks are down 0.21%. Energy stocks are leading the gains in the S&P 500 today. At last check, Energy stocks were trading 0.55% higher.

Among the major gainers and losers in late trading today are Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), which is currently trading 7.59% higher at $48.08, Chico’s FAS Inc. (NYSE: CHS), which is currently trading 16.63% higher at $14.94, SourceFire Inc. (NASDAQ: FIRE), which is currently trading 25.01% higher at $44.78, Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), which is currently trading 2.02% lower at $86.24, Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL), which is currently trading 6.04% lower at $17.11, Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL), which is currently trading 3.25% lower at $22.93, and Newfield Exploration Co. (NYSE: NFX), which is currently trading 12.50% lower at $36.97.

European markets ended mostly lower in trading today as the initial optimism over Greek debt deal faded. The FTSE 100 Index in London ended the day 0.20% lower at 5,916.55, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris ended the day 0.52% lower at 3,447.37. Asian markets had ended mostly higher overnight.
