Stocks End Flat in Light Trading
Stocks ended flat in Tuesday’s trading session as investors remained on the sideline. With the year coming to an end, trading activity is expected to remain light for the rest of the week.
The Dow Jones ended the day 0.02% lower at 12,291.35, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.01% higher at 1,265.43, and the Nasdaq ended the day flat at 2,625.20.
Utilities led the gains in the S&P 500 on Tuesday, ending the day 0.50% higher. Consumer Non-Cyclical stocks also rose on Tuesday, ending the day 0.20% higher. Consumer Cyclical and Financials were the worst performers in the S&P 500 on Tuesday. Consumer Cyclical stocks ended the day 0.57% lower, while Financials ended the day 0.54% lower. Basic Materials stocks ended the day 0.37% lower.
Among the major gainers and losers in trading on Tuesday were Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR), which ended the day 8.93% lower at $46.62, Cal-Maine Foods Inc. (NASDAQ: CALM), which ended the day 4.44% higher at $35.77, Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD), which ended the day 27.20% lower at $33.38, Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC), which ended the day 8.99% lower at $24.10, Cogdell Spencer Inc. (NYSE: CSA), which ended the day 8.67% higher at $4.26, Parlux Fragrances Inc. (NASDAQ: PARL), which ended the day 71.18% higher at $5.94, and Magnum Hunter Resources Corporation (NYSE: MHR), which ended the day 17.13% higher at $5.47.
Earlier in the day, a report released by the Conference Board showed that confidence among U.S. consumers rose more than forecast in the month of December, indicating that the recover in the labor market has lifted sentiments.
