Stocks Headed for a Strong Finish




Stocks are headed for a strong finish in trading today following last week’s huge sell-off. All three major indexes have risen sharply in trading today on hopes that European policymakers will implement fresh measures to contain the euro zone’s debt crisis.

Stocks have also been pushed higher by strong Thanksgiving sales in the U.S. The sales figure for the Thanksgiving weekend signal a strong holiday season for retailers.


At last check, the Dow Jones was trading 2.38% higher at 11,498.83, the S&P 500 was trading 2.70% higher at 1,189.90, and the Nasdaq was trading 3.24% higher at 2,520.74.

All sectors in the S&P 500 have risen sharply in trading today. Industrials are leading the gains in the S&P 500 today. At last check, Industrials were trading 3.76% higher. Basic Materials stocks are also soaring in trading today. At last check, Basic Materials stocks were trading 3.29% higher. Energy stocks are currently trading 3.23% higher. Financials are up 2.82%.

Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) shares have risen sharply in trading following the strong Black Friday sales. At last check, Tiffany & Co. shares were trading 5.76% higher at $73.50. The stock touched an intra-day high of $74.88 today.

Other major gainers in late trading include Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), which is currently trading 0.58% higher at $57.22, Commercial Metals Company (NYSE: CMC), which is currently trading 23.49% higher at $14.14, Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ARNA), which is currently trading 10.63% higher at $1.40 and Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), which is currently trading 3.28% higher at $26.47.

Among the major losers in late trading today are Ternium S.A. (ADR) (NYSE: TX), which is currently trading 14.29% lower at $16.56 and Randgold Resources Ltd. (ADR) (NASDAQ: GOLD), which is currently trading 7.45% lower at $96.14.
