GT Advanced Technologies, Inc. manufactures and sells advanced sapphire crystal growth systems, as well as sapphire materials used in LED applications, and sapphire components used in other specialty markets. The company operates through three segments: Polysilicon, Photovoltaic, and Sapphire. The Polysilicon segment manufactures and sells chemical vapor deposition, or CVD, reactors, used to react gases at high temperatures to produce polysilicon, the key raw material used in silicon-based solar wafers and cells, as well as engineering services and related equipment. The Photovoltaic segment manufactures and sells directional solidification, or DSS, crystallization furnaces and ancillary equipment used to cast multicrystalline silicon ingots by melting and cooling polysilicon in a precisely controlled process. These ingots are used to make photovoltaic wafers which are, in turn, used to make solar cells. The Sapphire segment manufactures and sells sapphire materials and equipment. The company was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Nashua, NH.
