Stocks End Lower
Stocks pared some of their losses in late trading but failed to finish in positive territory. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posted gains for the week though.
The Dow Jones ended the day 0.02% lower at 12,977.57, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.42% lower at 1,368.32, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.43% lower at 2,976.19.
For the week, the Dow Jones fell 0.05%, the S&P 500 rose 0.19%, and the Nasdaq rose 0.42%.
All sectors in the S&P 500 finished in red today. Energy stocks were the worst performers in the S&P 500, ending the day 1.03% lower. Basic Materials stocks ended the day 0.81% lower. Industrials ended the day 0.76% lower. Consumer Cyclical stocks ended the day 0.69% lower, while Technology stocks ended the day 0.36% lower. Financials fell 0.48%.
Among the major gainers and losers in trading today were Overstock.com Inc. (NASDAQ: OSTK), which ended the day 11.19% lower at $6.11, US Home Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:USHS), which ended the day 23.80% lower at $11.24, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ: WYNN), which ended the day 4.27% higher at $127.27, Shutterfly Inc. (NASDAQ: SFLY), which ended the day 16.54% higher at $31.36, Big Lots Inc. (NYSE: BIG), which ended the day 4% lower at $42.71, Foot Locker Inc. (NYSE: FL), which ended the day 1.86% lower at $28.97, and Yelp Inc. (NYSE: YELP), which ended the day 63.87% higher at $24.58.
European markets ended on a mixed note today, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.34% lower and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.04% higher. The EURO STOXX 50 Index ended the day 0.10% lower. Asian markets ended mostly higher overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index finishing the day 0.72% higher, and the Hang Seng Index finishing the day 0.81% higher.
