Market ends on a Mixed Note- Dow ends the day Lower
The U.S. equity market ended on a mixed note, with the Dow Jones finishing the day slightly lower. The Dow Jones ended the day 0.13% lower at 11,132.56, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.24% higher at 1,183.08 and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.80% higher at 2,479.39.
Shares of Clarient Inc. (NASDAQ: CLRT) rallied in today’s trading, after the company reported that it entered into a merger agreement with General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE). As per the agreement between the two companies, GE will acquire all of Clarient’s outstanding shares for $5 per share and preferred shares for $20 per share. Shares of Clarient ended the day 33.02% higher at $4.97. Meanwhile, Ge shares ended the day 0.28% lower at $16.06.
Among other gainers were Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG), which finished the day 14.79% higher at $205.77, Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR), which finished the day 12.47% higher at $9.92, Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD), which finished the day 18.88% higher at $19.77, and Riverbed Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: RVBD), which finished the day 18.31% higher at $54.27.
Gold futures dropped in trading today as the U.S. dollar rebounded. Gold futures for delivery in December dropped $0.50 to settle at $1,325.10 an ounce on the Comex in New York.
In Seoul, South Korea, where finance officials from G-20 countries are currently meeting, U.S. Treasury Secretary, Timothy F. Geithner proposed that G-20 members follow polices tom lower trade surpluses and deficits below a specified share of their economies.
