Android Becomes US Mobile Market Leader
The smartphone industry has continued to grow and new and improved smartphones are released into the market on a regular basis. Apple was one of the first companies to release one of the most successful smartphones, however they have started to receive competition from several other manufacturers. While Apple OS for mobile devices continue to remain popular, it was recently reported that the Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) owned Android Operating System is slowing taking over and become widely used. In a new report recently published, it shows that Android based smartphones have just taken over Apple and currently hold the largest percentage of the market share in the United States. Google’s Android has fast become popular and there are several reasons for the OS to dominate the market. As Apple is known to only use their OS on their products, Google has not held back from letting other manufacturers and distributors use their mobile operating system. As Google has been flexible with their contracts with manufacturers, several major manufacturers have started to use Android. Over 50% of the smartphones currently available in the market use the Android OS, and as a result, the company has been able to increase their awareness and success, from the program. The company has not limited the use and due to their willingness to make their products widely available, it has become easier for them to dominate the market and take over Apple. In addition, Apple has also been expiring production problems which have led them to decrease their overall market supply. Due to the recent devastation in Japan, many of Apple’s part manufacturers have had to shut down their plants and as a result, the company has had to decrease their output. Due to their lack of supply, they have lost a large portion of their potential customer base, along with their market share, in many parts of the world, including the United States.
Smartphones have slowly become more of a necessity than a luxury and as a result their use has continued to increase. However not every person interested in purchasing a smartphone can afford Apple products. Because of the cost reason, Apple has lost potential customers to their competitors. In an effort to take care of those who are looking for lower cost devices, several manufacturers have been able to use the Android platform for their lower cost smartphones. This has certainly helped Google and Android, gain additional market share to become the market leader.
