Market Opens Higher-General Motors Co. Begins Trading

The U.S. equity market has opened higher, with all three major indexes in green. The Dow Jones opened higher at 11,010.49, the S&P 500 opened higher at 1,183.75 and the Nasdaq opened higher at 2,504.41.

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) shares today began trading after much anticipation. Shares of the Detroit, Michigan-based automaker are currently up 6.85% to $35.27.

Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR) shares are rallying after the company reported its third-quarter financial results. The third-largest U.S. dollar store-operator raised its sales and earnings forecast for 2010. The company said that it now expects profit of $3.14 for the full year, above analysts’ estimate o $3.09. For the third quarter of 2010, the company reported a profit of $93.2 million, or $0.73 per share, up from $68.2 million, or $0.51 per share reported in the same period in 2009. The company’s third-quarter net sales climbed 14% to $1.43 billion. Shares of Dollar Tree are currently up 3.62% to $56.69, after opening at $56.39.

Initial jobless claims rose less-than-forecast for the week ended November 13, according the figures released by the Labor Department. The Labor department figures showed that initial jobless claims for the week ended November 13 increased by 2,000 to 439,000, below the forecast of 441,000.

Ireland today acknowledged for the first time that it is seeking aid from international lenders to end the debt crisis. The news gave a boost to the global markets.
