Motorola Launches Droid RAZR
Motoorla Mobility Holdings Inc. (NYSE:MMI) unveiled its newest smartphone successor to it’s highly successful RAZR line and also a mini media player and personal fitness device on Tuesday.
The event titles “faster, thinner, smarter, stronger” was announced just a few hours before the upcoming launch of the next version of Google’s Android OS and a smartphone by Samsung. The device named Droid Razr is expected to follow in the lines of the highly successful Moto Razr flip phone and also the Droid smartphone that saw satisfactory sales.
The new smartphone is touted to be the thinnest smartphone ever at 7.1 millimeters in thickness. The Razr is not just thinner, but also is extremely strong and durable, with a kevlar case to protect the outer case, a scratch resistant gorilla glass in the front and water resistance. The device will also be hitting the stores in November for $299, with the preorders beginning on October 27.
The device is being unveiled just a few days after the Apple iPhone hit the stores and received overwhelming response from around the world. Apart from the iPhone, the Razr will also have to compete against Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones and also the soon to be launched phone in collaboration with Google.
The Razr was launched in 2005 and was a blockbuster device for Motorola both in United States and around the world. The Razr became famous for its thickness and set apart the phone from other devices in the market. However the cell phone manufacturer was not able to build on its success and could not catch up with the rapidly growing smartphone market that began with the launch of the first iPhone.
The new Driod Razr Smartphone has a larger battery that when compared to other smartphone, can last 30 percent longer. The device will also be launched with various cloud storage features that mimic the iCloud services offered by Apple in certain ways. The device will be launched on Verizon Communications Inc. in United States and on Vodafone Group in United Kingdom. The smartphone has a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED qHD display that can play close to HD videos and a 8 megapixel 1080p back camera and a HD front facing camera. The phone is also 4G LTE capable.
Motorola was acquired by Google two months back and is currently awaiting approval from the federal authorities. The phone will come with the older generation of Google’s Android Operating system, with assurance to upgrade it once the new version comes online.
Another device announced by Motorola was the MotoActv, a wearable Mp3 and fitness device that is identical in size to Apple iPod mini.
