Stocks ended on a mixed note in trading on Monday as investors monitored developments in the euro zone, where negotiations between Greece and its creditors continued. Stocks also slipped as investors booked profit following last week’s rally.
The Dow Jones ended 0.09% lower at 12,708.82, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.05% higher at 1,316, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.1% lower at 2,784.17.
Energy stocks led the gains in the S&P 500 in trading on Monday, ending the day 1.19% higher. Energy stocks rallied as crude oil prices rose sharply after the European Union imposed an oil embargo on Iran. Basic Materials stocks also rose sharply on Monday, ending the day 0.52% higher. Transportation stocks were the worst performers in Monday’s trading session, ending the day 0.47% lower. Consumer Non-Cyclical stocks ended the day 0.37% lower.
Among the major gainers and losers in trading on Monday were Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ: TXN), which ended the day 1.34% lower at $33.19, Polycom Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), which ended the day 3.83% higher at $18.42, VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW), which ended the day 2.41% lower at $86, Minefinders Corp. Ltd. (AMEX: MFN), which ended the day 22.91% higher at $13.95, InterDigital Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC), which ended the day 3.31% lower at $44.45, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE: SWN), which ended the day 10.30% higher at $32.46, and Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ: RIMM), which ended the day 8.47% lower at $15.56.
