Stocks End on a Mixed Note



Stocks ended on a mixed note in trading on Tuesday as investors remained cautious as Greece’s debt restructuring talks failed. Stocks also struggled as investors digested some mixed earnings reports.

The Dow Jones ended the day 0.26% lower at $12,675.75, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.1% lower at 1,314.65, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.09% higher at 2,786.64.

Transportation stocks led the losses in the S&P 500 on Tuesday, ending the day 0.91% lower. Basic Materials stocks also fell sharply on Tuesday, ending the day 0.53% lower. Financials ended the day 0.41% lower. Consumer Cyclical stocks were the best performers in trading today, ending the day 0.89% higher.

Among the major gainers and losers in trading on Tuesday were Polycom Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), which ended the day 13.19% higher at $20.85, InterDigital Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC), which ended the day 19.26% lower at $35.89, Jarden Corporation (NYSE: JAH), which ended the day 10.03% higher at $33.79, Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE: NOK), which ended the day 8.03% lower at $5.27, Semtech Corporation (NASDAQ: SMTC), which ended the day 8.37% higher at $29.14, Kansas City Southern (NYSE: KSU), which ended the day 7.58% lower at $66.84, and Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT), which ended the day 7.97% higher at $85.04.

The Federal Reserve on Tuesday began its two-day monetary policy meeting. The Fed will make an announcement on interest rates on Wednesday. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will also hold a press conference on Wednesday. For the first time, the Fed will also unveil its interest rate projections.
