Stocks ended lower in trading on Thursday as a disappointing new home sales report weighed down investors’ sentiment. Stocks also slipped as initial optimism over the Federal Reserve’s pledge to keep interest rates low until late 2014 faded.
All three major indexes ended the day in red. The Dow Jones ended the day 0.18% lower at 12,734.63, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.57% lower at 1,318.43, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.46% lower at 2,805.28.
Energy stocks led the losses in the S&P 500 in trading on Thursday, ending the day 1% lower. Technology stocks also fell sharply on Thursday, ending the day 0.52% lower. Industrials fell 0.43% on Thursday, while Financials ended the day 0.59% lower. Transportation stocks were the best performers in the S&P 500 on Thursday, ending the day 0.42% higher. Basic Materials stocks ended the day 0.32% higher.
Among the major gainers and losers in trading on Thursday were Micromet Inc. (NASDAQ: MITI), which ended the day 32.13% higher at $10.94, CARBO Ceramics Inc. (NYSE: CRR), which ended the day 20.63% lower at $104, Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), which ended the day 22.06% higher at $116.01, E Trade Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC), which ended the day 14.64% lower at $7.99, Parametric Technology (NASDAQ: PMTC), which ended the day 18.87% higher at $25.64, SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), which ended the day 11.37% lower at $46.39, and J.C. Penney Company Inc. (NYSE: JCP), which ended the day 18.79% higher at $40.72.
European markets finished mostly higher on Thursday, with all major indexes ending sharply higher.
