Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) has announced its foray into the Chinese private equity market. The company has said that it has partnered with Hangzhou for the launch of yuan-denominated funds. The company has signed an agreement with the local government.
* Morgan Stanley will have its China headquarters in the city of Hangzhou.
* Morgan Stanley is looking to raise $225 million during its initial phase.
The company will invest in non-public companies. China is receiving much interest from global private equity firms. It already has companies like Carlyle Group and Blackstone Group making private equity investments in the country. Warburg Pincus is also said to be looking to set up Yuan funds.
Hangzhou city government has issued a statement and has said, “We hope that the partnership with Morgan Stanley would help boost private sector investment, accelerate economic restructuring and boost the local private equity industry.” Morgan Stanley has confirmed the news of its partnership but it refused to make any announcement about the size of the fund.
Morgan Stanley had recently acquired 20 percent stake in Hangzhou Industrial & Commercial Trust Company. The stake was bought in 2008.
